Why do the nations seethe with rage, and the peoples plot what will come to nothing?

The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers conspire together -- against Yahweh, and against the One he has chosen,

"Let's tear off their chains," they say. "Let's throw off their ropes."

The one enthroned in the heavens laughs. The Lord looks at them with amusement.

Then he speaks to them in his fury, and in his burning anger he terrifies them:

"I myself have installed my king on Zion, my set-apart mountain."

I will proclaim Yahweh's decree: He said to me, "You are my son. Today, I have become your father."

Ask me, and I will give you the nations as your inheritance -- the farthest edges of the earth as your possession.

You will shatter them with an iron rod. You will smash them like a clay pot.

So now, you kings -- think clearly. Take this as a warning, you rulers of the earth.

Serve Yahweh with deep reverence. Celebrate with trembling.

Honor the Son, or he will be angry and you will be destroyed along the way -- for his fury can ignite in an instant. But life is deeply good for all who take refuge in him.
