Yahweh, God of payback, God of payback, shine out.

Rise up, judge of the earth, give the arrogant what they've earned.

How long, Yahweh? How long will the wicked celebrate?

They pour out arrogant words, every one of them swaggering with cruelty.

Yahweh, they crush your people, they grind down the ones who belong to you.

They kill the widow and the immigrant, they murder the orphan.

And they say, "Yahweh doesn't see. The God of Jacob doesn't even notice."

Wake up, you most senseless of people. You fools — when will you ever understand?

The one who shaped the ear — can he not hear? The one who formed the eye — can he not see?

The one who disciplines nations — can he not correct? The one who teaches humanity — does he lack knowledge?

Yahweh knows the thoughts of humans — they are nothing but a breath.

Life is good for the one you discipline, Yahweh, the one you teach from your instruction —

giving them rest from the worst days, until a pit is dug for the wicked.

Because Yahweh will not abandon his people, he will not walk away from those who belong to him.

Because justice will return to doing what's right, and everyone with an upright heart will follow it.

Who will stand up for me against those doing evil? Who will take my side against those working cruelty?

If Yahweh hadn't been my help, I would have quickly ended up in the silence of death.

When I said, "My foot is slipping," your faithful love held me up, Yahweh.

When anxious thoughts multiplied inside me, your comfort brought joy to my soul.

Can a corrupt throne be your ally — one that manufactures misery and calls it law?

They gang up against the life of the just and condemn the innocent to death.

But Yahweh has become my fortress, my God, the rock where I take cover.

He will turn their cruelty back on them and wipe them out with their own evil. Yahweh our God will wipe them out.
