A prayer of Moses, the man of God. Yahweh, you have been our shelter generation after generation.

Before the mountains were born, before you labored to bring forth the earth and the world -- from forever ago to forever ahead, you are God.

You turn people back to dust, saying, "Go back, children of Adam."

A thousand years in your sight are like yesterday once it has passed, like a few hours in the night.

You sweep people away like a flood in their sleep. In the morning they are like grass that springs up --

in the morning it blooms and flourishes; by evening it is cut down and withers.

We are consumed by your anger, terrified by your fury.

You have laid out our failures before you, our hidden wrongs in the light of your face.

All our days slip away under your frustration; we finish our years with a sigh.

The span of our lives is seventy years -- or eighty, if we have the strength. Yet even the best of those years are struggle and sorrow; they pass quickly, and we fly away.

Who truly grasps the force of your anger? Your fury matches the reverence you deserve.

Teach us to number our days carefully, so we may gain a heart of wisdom.

Come back to us, Yahweh! How long will this go on? Have compassion on the people who serve you.

Satisfy us in the morning with your faithful love, so we can sing and celebrate all our days.

Give us joy to match the days you made us suffer, the years we have known hardship.

Let your work be visible to the people who serve you, your magnificence to their children.

Let the kindness of Yahweh our God rest on us. Establish the work of our hands for us -- yes, establish the work of our hands.
