Then I said: Listen, you who lead Jacob, you who rule the house of Israel. Knowing what is just is your job.

You hate what is good and you love what is cruel. You tear the skin off my people and the meat off their bones.

You eat the flesh of my own people. You strip off their skin and crack their bones open, and you chop them up like meat for the pot, like cuts of stew going into the cauldron.

Then they will call out to Yahweh, and he will not answer them. He will hide his face from them at that time, because of the harm they have done.

This is what Yahweh says about the prophets who lead my people off the road: When their teeth have something to bite on, they call out, "All is well." But whoever puts nothing in their mouths, against him they declare a war.

So night is coming over you, and no more visions. Darkness is coming, and nothing left to read in it. The sun will go down on these prophets and the daylight will turn black above them.

The seers will stand there ashamed, the fortune tellers with nothing to say. Every one of them will cover his mouth, because no answer comes from God.

But I am filled with power, with the Breath of Yahweh, with the right verdict and the strength to say it, to tell Jacob what he has revolted against and Israel where he has failed.

Listen to this, you who lead the house of Jacob, you who rule the house of Israel, you who cannot stand a fair verdict and bend everything that is straight.

You are building Zion out of blood and Jerusalem out of crooked dealing.

Her leaders hand down verdicts for a bribe. Her priests teach for a fee. Her prophets read the omens for silver. And all of them lean on Yahweh and say, "Isn't Yahweh right here with us? Nothing bad can reach us."

So because of you, Zion will be ploughed like a field, Jerusalem will be a heap of stones, and the hill the temple stands on will go back to being scrub and trees.
