From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God.

He said: I called to Yahweh out of the tight place I was in, and he answered me. From the belly of the grave I shouted for help, and you heard my voice.

You threw me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current wrapped itself around me. All your breakers, all your waves, went over me.

And I said, I have been driven out, gone from in front of your eyes. Yet I will look again toward your temple, the place kept for you.

The waters closed over me, up to my throat. The deep was all around me. Seaweed was tangled around my head.

I went down to the roots of the mountains. The earth shut its gates behind me for good. But you brought my life up out of the pit, Yahweh my God.

When my life was draining out of me, I remembered Yahweh, and my prayer reached you, reached your temple, the place kept for you.

People who hold on to empty nothings walk away from the loyal love that was theirs.

But I will bring you an offering with a voice full of thanks. What I promised, I will pay. Rescue belongs to Yahweh.

Then Yahweh spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out onto the dry land.
