Zechariah 4 in plain modern English. New Ground English Translation.

The messenger who had been talking with me came back and woke me up, the way you wake someone out of sleep.

He asked me, "What do you see?" I said, "I see a lampstand, solid gold, with a bowl at the top of it, seven lamps set on it, and seven pipes running to each of the lamps on top."

Two olive trees stand beside it, one on the right of the bowl and one on its left.

I said to the messenger who was talking with me, "What are these, sir?"

The messenger answered, "Don't you know what these are?" I said, "No, sir."

Then he said to me, "This is Yahweh's word to Zerubbabel: Not by an army, not by force, but by my Breath, says Yahweh who commands armies."

"Who are you, great mountain? In front of Zerubbabel you flatten into level ground. He will bring out the top stone while people shout, 'Beautiful! Beautiful!'"

Then Yahweh's word came to me:

"Zerubbabel's hands laid the foundation of this house, and his hands will finish it. Then you will know that Yahweh who commands armies sent me to you."

"Whoever sneered at the day of small things will be glad when they see the plumb stone in Zerubbabel's hand. These seven are the eyes of Yahweh, ranging back and forth over the whole earth."

Then I asked him, "What are these two olive trees, the one on the right of the lampstand and the one on its left?"

I asked a second time, "What are these two olive branches, the ones next to the two gold pipes that pour the golden oil out of themselves?"

He said, "Don't you know what these are?" I said, "No, sir."

He said, "These are the two sons of oil, the two who stand beside the Lord of all the earth."
