Miriam and Aaron started criticizing Moses because of the Cushite woman he had married — he had indeed married a Cushite woman.

They said, "Is Moses really the only one Yahweh speaks through? Doesn't he speak through us too?" And Yahweh heard it.

Now Moses was more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth.

Suddenly Yahweh said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, "All three of you — come out to the meeting tent." So the three of them went out.

Yahweh came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent. He called out, "Aaron! Miriam!" and both of them stepped forward.

He said, "Listen carefully to what I'm saying: When there's a prophet among you, I, Yahweh, make myself known to them through visions. I speak to them in dreams.

But that's not how it is with my servant Moses. He is entrusted with my entire household.

I speak with him face to face — openly and plainly, not in riddles. He even sees the form of Yahweh. So why weren't you afraid to criticize my servant Moses?"

Yahweh's anger burned against them, and he left.

When the cloud lifted from above the tent, there was Miriam — her skin covered in a disease that made it white as snow. Aaron turned toward her and saw the disease covering her skin.

Aaron said to Moses, "Please, my lord! Don't hold this failure against us. We acted foolishly and we've done wrong.

Don't let her be like a stillborn baby, already half-decomposed when it comes out of its mother's body."

Moses cried out to Yahweh, "God, please — heal her, please!"

Yahweh said to Moses, "If her own father had spit in her face, wouldn't she carry that shame for seven days? Confine her outside the camp for seven days, and after that she can be brought back in."

So Miriam was confined outside the camp for seven days, and the people didn't move on until she was brought back.

After that, the people set out from Hazeroth and made camp in the Paran wilderness.
