One day the sons of God came to take their places before Yahweh, and the Accuser came in among them to take his place before Yahweh.

Yahweh said to the Accuser, "Where have you come from?" The Accuser answered Yahweh, "From roaming the earth, from walking up and down in it."

Yahweh said to the Accuser, "Have you noticed my servant Job? There is no one like him on earth — a man of complete integrity, straight in everything he does, who takes God seriously and keeps clear of evil. He is still holding on to his integrity, even after you moved me against him to swallow him up for no reason at all."

The Accuser answered Yahweh, "Skin for skin. A man will hand over everything he owns to keep his own life."

"But reach out your hand and touch his bones and his flesh, and he will curse you to your face."

Yahweh said to the Accuser, "All right — he is in your hands. Only spare his life."

So the Accuser left Yahweh's presence and struck Job with agonizing sores, from the soles of his feet to the top of his head.

Job took a broken piece of pottery to scrape himself with, and he sat down in the ashes.

His wife said to him, "Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die."

He said to her, "You're talking the way an empty-headed woman talks. Are we going to take the good from God and not take the trouble too?" Through all of this, Job did not fail with anything he said.

Job's three friends heard about all the disaster that had come on him, and each of them set out from his own home — Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuah, Zophar from Naamah. They agreed to go together and grieve with him and comfort him.

When they looked up from a distance, they did not recognize him. They broke out weeping, and each of them tore his robe and threw dust into the air over his head.

They sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and not one of them said a word to him, because they saw how enormous his pain was.
