Jeremiah 43 in plain modern English. New Ground English Translation.

When Jeremiah finished telling all the people every word that Yahweh their God had sent him to deliver — the entire message —

Azariah son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the arrogant men spoke up to Jeremiah: "You're lying. Yahweh our God never sent you to tell us, 'Don't go to Egypt to settle there.'

It's Baruch son of Neriah who's turning you against us, trying to hand us over to the Babylonians so they'll kill us or drag us off to Babylon as exiles."

So Johanan son of Kareah, all the military commanders, and all the people refused to obey Yahweh's command to stay in the land of Judah.

Instead, Johanan son of Kareah and all the military commanders took the entire surviving community of Judah — everyone who had come back from all the nations where they'd been scattered and had returned to live in Judah:

the men, women, and children, the king's daughters, and every person that Nebuzaradan the captain of the imperial guard had left with Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan — including Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch son of Neriah.

They went to Egypt, because they refused to listen to Yahweh's voice. And they made it all the way to Tahpanhes.

Then Yahweh's message came to Jeremiah at Tahpanhes:

"Pick up some large stones and, while the Judean men are watching, bury them in the mortar of the brick pavement at the entrance to Pharaoh's government building in Tahpanhes.

Then tell them, 'This is what Yahweh, the Commander of angel armies, the God of Israel, says: I'm about to send for my servant Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and I'll set his throne right over these stones I've had buried here. He'll spread his royal canopy above them.

When he comes, he'll strike Egypt. Those meant for death will get death. Those meant for captivity will get captivity. Those meant for the sword will get the sword.

I'll set fire to the temples of Egypt's gods. Nebuchadnezzar will burn them down and carry the idol-statues away. He'll pick Egypt clean the way a shepherd picks lice off his coat, and he'll walk out of there untouched.

He'll smash the sacred pillars of the Temple of the Sun in Egypt and burn down the temples of Egypt's gods.'"
