In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne — high, lifted up — and the hem of his robe filled the entire temple.

Seraphim stood above him, each with six wings: two covering their faces, two covering their feet, and two for flying.

They called out to each other: "Unlike unlike unlike ANY other — Yahweh, Commander of angel armies! The whole earth is full of his weight and brilliance!"

The doorframes shook at the sound of their voices, and the whole house filled with smoke.

Then I said, "I'm done for! I'm destroyed — because I'm a man with contaminated lips, living among a people with contaminated lips, and my own eyes have just seen the King, Yahweh, Commander of angel armies!"

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, carrying a burning coal he had taken from the altar with tongs.

He touched it to my mouth and said, "Look — this has touched your lips. Your failure is taken away; the price for your wrongs has been paid."

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Who should I send? Who will go for us?" And I said, "Here I am — send me!"

He said, "Go and tell this people: 'Keep listening, but never understand. Keep looking, but never see.'"

"Make the hearts of this people calloused. Make their ears dull. Shut their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn back — and be healed."

Then I said, "How long, Lord?" And he answered: "Until cities lie in ruins with no one living in them, until houses stand empty, until the land is completely wasted,"

"until Yahweh has sent everyone far away, and the whole land is abandoned."

"And even if a tenth remains in it, it will be burned again. But like an oak or a terebinth tree — when it's cut down, a stump remains. That stump is the seed that will start everything over."
