A shoot will push up from the stump of Jesse, a branch will grow from his roots.

The Breath of Yahweh will rest on him — the breath of wisdom and understanding, the breath of counsel and strength, the breath of knowing Yahweh and standing in awe of him.

His delight will be in standing in awe of Yahweh. He will not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear.

He will judge the powerless with justice and decide fairly for the humble of the land. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he will put the wicked to death.

Justice will be the belt around his waist, faithfulness the sash around his hips.

The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the young goat. The calf and the lion will feed together, and a small child will lead them.

The cow and the bear will graze together, their young will lie down side by side. The lion will eat straw like the ox.

An infant will play near the cobra's den, a toddler will reach into the viper's nest.

Nothing will cause harm, nothing will destroy on all my set-apart mountain. For the earth will be filled with knowing Yahweh the way the waters cover the sea.

On that day, the root of Jesse will stand as a signal for the peoples. The nations will seek him out, and his resting place will be glorious.

On that day, the Lord will reach out his hand a second time to reclaim the remnant of his people — those left in Assyria and Egypt, in Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar, Hamath, and the coastlands of the sea.

He will raise a signal for the nations and gather the scattered people of Israel. He will collect the dispersed people of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

Ephraim's jealousy will vanish, and those who harass Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will no longer envy Judah, and Judah will no longer antagonize Ephraim.

They will swoop down on the Philistine hills to the west. Together they will plunder the people of the east. They will overpower Edom and Moab, and the Ammonites will answer to them.

Yahweh will dry up the gulf of the Egyptian sea. He will wave his hand over the Euphrates with a scorching wind and split it into seven streams so that anyone can cross in sandals.

There will be a highway for the remnant of his people, for those left in Assyria — just as there was for Israel on the day they came up from Egypt.
