The man was intimate with Chavah his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Qayin. She said, "I have acquired a man with the help of Yahweh."

Then she gave birth to his brother, Hevel. Hevel became a shepherd, and Qayin worked the ground.

After some time, Qayin brought some of the produce of the ground as an offering to Yahweh.

Hevel also brought an offering — from the firstborn of his flock, from their fat portions. Yahweh looked favorably on Hevel and his offering,

but on Qayin and his offering he did not look favorably. This made Qayin furious, and his face fell.

Yahweh said to Qayin, "Why are you so angry? Why has your face fallen?"

"If you do what is right, won't you be accepted? But if you don't do what is right, failure is crouching at your door. It wants to control you, but you must master it."

Qayin said to his brother Hevel, "Let's go out to the field." And when they were in the field, Qayin attacked his brother Hevel and killed him.

Yahweh said to Qayin, "Where is your brother Hevel?" He said, "I don't know. Am I my brother's keeper?"

Yahweh said, "What have you done? Your brother's blood is crying out to me from the ground!"

"Now you are cursed — driven away from the ground that opened its mouth to swallow your brother's blood from your hand."

"When you work the ground, it will no longer give you its strength. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth."

Qayin said to Yahweh, "My punishment is more than I can bear!"

"Look — today you are driving me away from the face of the ground, and I will be hidden from your presence. I will be a restless wanderer on the earth, and anyone who finds me will kill me."

Yahweh said to him, "Not so. If anyone kills Qayin, vengeance will be taken on them seven times over." Then Yahweh put a mark on Qayin so that no one who found him would kill him.

So Qayin left Yahweh's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

Qayin was intimate with his wife, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Chanokh. Qayin was building a city, and he named the city after his son — Chanokh.

To Chanokh was born Irad, and Irad fathered Mechuyael, and Mechuyael fathered Metushael, and Metushael fathered Lemekh.

Lemekh took two wives for himself. The name of the first was Adah, and the name of the second was Tsillah.

Adah gave birth to Yaval. He became the father of those who live in tents and raise livestock.

His brother's name was Yuval. He became the father of everyone who plays the lyre and the pipe.

Tsillah also gave birth to Tuval-Qayin, who forged all kinds of tools from bronze and iron. Tuval-Qayin's sister was Na'amah.

Lemekh said to his wives: "Adah and Tsillah, hear my voice! Wives of Lemekh, listen to what I say! I have killed a man for wounding me, a young man for striking me."

"If Qayin is avenged seven times, then Lemekh will be avenged seventy-seven times."

Adam was intimate with his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Shet, saying, "Because God has appointed another offspring for me in place of Hevel, since Qayin killed him."

Shet also had a son, and he named him Enosh. At that time, people began to call on the name of Yahweh.
