Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to Yahweh: "I will sing to Yahweh — he has risen in magnificent triumph. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea."

"Yahweh is my strength, my song — he is the one who rescued me. This is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will lift him high."

When Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and horsemen went into the sea, Yahweh brought the waters of the sea back over them. But the Israelites had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground.

Then Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, picked up a tambourine, and all the women followed her out with tambourines, dancing.

And Miriam sang back to them: "Sing to Yahweh — he has risen in magnificent triumph. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea."

Then Moses led Israel away from the Sea of Reeds, and they went out into the Shur Desert. They traveled for three days in the desert without finding any water.

When they arrived at Marah, they couldn't drink the water there because it was bitter. That's why the place was called Marah.

The people complained against Moses, saying, "What are we supposed to drink?"

Moses cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became drinkable. It was there that Yahweh set down an expectation and a standard for them, and there he tested them.

He said, "If you truly listen to the voice of Yahweh your God and do what is right in his eyes — if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his expectations — I won't bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians. Because I am Yahweh, your healer."

Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there by the water.
