Key Background

Chapter 8 specifically reflects on the 40-year wilderness period as a time of testing and humbling, emphasizing God's provision of manna and water. Moses warns the people against future pride and self-sufficiency once they enjoy Canaan's abundance, reminding them that prosperity comes from God alone and that forgetting Him will lead to destruction.

1

Be careful to follow every I'm giving you today, so that you'll live, grow in number, and go in and take possession of the land Yahweh swore to give your ancestors.

2

Remember the entire journey Yahweh your God has led you on these forty years through the to you, to you, and to find out what was really in your heart: whether you'd keep his commands or not.

3

He humbled you by letting you go hungry, then fed you with something neither you nor your ancestors had ever known to teach you that people don't stay alive on bread alone, but on

4

Your clothes didn't wear out on you and your feet didn't swell up during those forty years.

5

So take this to heart: Yahweh your God has been you the way a man trains his own son.

6

So keep the commands of Yahweh your God in and hold him in

7

Because Yahweh your God is bringing you into a a with streams of water, springs and underground sources that flow out through the valleys and hills,

8

a land of wheat and barley, grapevines, fig trees, and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and

9

a land where you'll eat food without any shortage—you won't lack a thing there—a land whose rocks contain iron and whose hills you can mine for copper.

10

When you've eaten and are satisfied, Yahweh your God for the good land he's given you.

11

Be careful not to forget Yahweh your God by failing to keep his commands, his and his that I'm giving you today.

12

Otherwise, when you've eaten and are satisfied, when you've built nice houses and settled in,

13

when your herds and flocks have multiplied, when your silver and gold have piled up, and everything you own has increased—

14

then your heart will become arrogant and you'll forget Yahweh your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the

15

who led you through that vast and terrifying wilderness full of and scorpions, a thirsty wasteland with no water at all who brought water out of solid rock for you,

16

who fed you manna in the wilderness—something your ancestors had never known—in order to humble you and test you, so that things would go well for you in the end.

17

Don't ever say to yourself, 'My own and the power of my own hands produced all this wealth for me.'

18

Instead, remember that it's Yahweh your God who gives you the ability to produce wealth and he does this to uphold the he swore to your ancestors, just as he's doing today.

19

But if you ever completely forget Yahweh your God and go after other serving them and bowing down to them, I'm warning you right now: you will be utterly destroyed.

20

Just like the nations Yahweh is destroying ahead of you, that's exactly how you'll be destroyed because you refused to to Yahweh your God.
