Then we turned and went up the road toward Bashan. King Og of Bashan marched out with his entire army to meet us in battle at Edrei.

But Yahweh told me, "Don't be afraid of him, because I'm handing him over to you — him, his entire army, and his land. Do to him exactly what you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon."

So Yahweh our God also handed over King Og of Bashan and his entire army to us. We struck them down until no survivor was left.

We captured all his cities at that time. There wasn't a single town we didn't take from them — sixty cities, the entire region of Argob, Og's kingdom in Bashan.

All of these were fortified cities with high walls, gates, and bars — plus a huge number of unwalled villages.

We completely destroyed them — just as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon — destroying every city: men, women, and children.

But all the livestock and the plunder from the cities we kept for ourselves.

So at that time we took the land from the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley all the way to Mount Hermon.

(The Sidonians call Hermon "Sirion," and the Amorites call it "Senir.")

We took all the towns of the plateau, all of Gilead, and all of Bashan, as far as Salecah and Edrei — towns of Og's kingdom in Bashan.

(King Og of Bashan was the last of the Rephaim still alive. His bed was made of iron — it's still in Rabbah of the Ammonites. It's thirteen and a half feet long and six feet wide by standard measurement.)

Of the land we took at that time, I gave the territory north of Aroer along the Arnon Valley, including half of the hill country of Gilead with its towns, to the tribes of Reuben and Gad.

The rest of Gilead and all of Bashan — Og's kingdom — I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh. (The entire region of Argob, with all of Bashan, used to be called the land of the Rephaim.

Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the entire Argob region as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites, and renamed the Bashan villages after himself — Havvoth-Jair, which is what they're still called today.)

I gave Gilead to Makir.

To the tribes of Reuben and Gad, I gave the territory from Gilead down to the Arnon Valley — the middle of the valley being the border — and up to the Jabbok River, which is the border with the Ammonites.

Their western border was the Jordan River valley, from the Sea of Galilee down to the Dead Sea, below the slopes of Pisgah to the east.

At that time I gave you this command: "Yahweh your God has given you this land east of the Jordan to take as your own. But all your fighting men must cross over armed, ahead of your fellow Israelites.

Only your wives, your children, and your livestock—I know you have a lot of livestock—may stay behind in the towns I've given you,

until Yahweh gives your fellow Israelites rest, just as he's given it to you, and they too have taken possession of the land that Yahweh your God is giving them across the Jordan. After that, each of you may return to the territory I've given you."

And I told Joshua at that time, "You've seen with your own eyes everything Yahweh your God has done to these two kings. Yahweh will do the same thing to all the kingdoms you're about to cross into.

Don't be afraid of them. Yahweh your God himself is fighting for you."

At that time I pleaded with Yahweh:

"Yahweh, my master, you've only begun to show your servant your greatness and your powerful hand. What god in heaven or on earth can do anything like your works and your mighty acts?

Please, let me cross over and see the good land on the other side of the Jordan — that beautiful hill country and Lebanon."

But Yahweh was angry with me because of you and wouldn't listen. Yahweh said to me, "That's enough! Don't bring this up with me again.

Go up to the top of Pisgah and look west, north, south, and east. Take a good look with your own eyes, because you will not cross this Jordan.

But commission Joshua, and encourage and strengthen him, because he's the one who will cross over ahead of this people. He'll lead them to inherit the land you'll only see from a distance."

So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-Peor.
