At that time Yahweh told me, 'Cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and come up to me on the mountain. Also make a wooden chest.

I will write on the tablets the same words that were on the first tablets — the ones you smashed — and you will put them in the chest.'

So I made a chest out of acacia wood, cut two stone tablets like the first ones, and went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hands.

He wrote on the tablets the same thing he had written before — the ten statements he had spoken to you from the fire on the day of the assembly — and Yahweh gave them to me.

Then I came back down the mountain and placed the tablets in the chest I had made, and that is where they have been, just as Yahweh told me.

(The Israelites traveled from Beeroth Bene Jaakan to Moserah. Aaron died there and was buried there, and his son Eleazar served as priest after him.

Now I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, just like the first time, and Yahweh listened to me that time too — Yahweh chose not to destroy you.

Then Yahweh said to me, 'Get up and lead the people on their journey, so they can go in and take possession of the land I swore to give to their ancestors.'

So now, Israel, what does Yahweh your God ask of you? Just this: to stand in awe of Yahweh your God, to live the way he wants you to live, to love him, to serve Yahweh your God with everything you are and everything you have,

and to keep Yahweh's commands and instructions that I am giving you today — for your own good.

Look — the heavens belong to Yahweh your God, even the highest heavens, along with the earth and everything in it.

Yet it was your ancestors that Yahweh was drawn to and loved, and he chose you — their descendants — out of all the peoples on earth. And that is still true today.

So cut away the stubbornness from your hearts and stop being so stiff-necked.

Because Yahweh your God is the God above all gods and the Master above all masters — the great God, mighty and awe-inspiring, who shows no favoritism and takes no bribes.

He makes sure orphans and widows get justice, and he loves the foreigner, giving them food and clothing.

So you must love the foreigner too, because you were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.

Stand in awe of Yahweh your God. Serve him. Hold on to him tightly. And when you make a solemn promise, do it in his name.

He is the one you should praise. He is your God, who did those great and awe-inspiring things for you that you saw with your own eyes.

Your ancestors went down to Egypt as just seventy people, and now Yahweh your God has made you as numerous as the stars in the sky.
