One day Peter and John were heading up to the temple for the afternoon prayer time — around three in the afternoon.

There was a man who had been unable to walk since the day he was born. Every day, people would carry him to the temple gate called "the Beautiful Gate" so he could ask for money from people going in.

When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked them for money.

Peter looked straight at him — so did John — and said, "Look at us."

The man gave them his full attention, expecting to get something from them.

But Peter said, "I don't have silver or gold, but what I do have, I'm giving you: in the name of Jesus, The One, from Nazareth — get up and walk."

He grabbed the man's right hand and pulled him up. Instantly, the man's feet and ankles became strong.

He jumped to his feet and started walking! He went into the temple with them, walking and jumping and praising God.

Everyone there saw him walking and praising God,

and they recognized him as the same man who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate asking for money. They were completely stunned and couldn't believe what had happened to him.

While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people came running toward them at the area called Solomon's Covered Walkway, completely amazed.

When Peter saw this, he spoke to the crowd: "People of Israel, why does this surprise you? Why are you staring at us as if we made this man walk by our own power or because we're so devoted to God?"

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob — the God of our ancestors — has given the highest honor to his servant Jesus. You handed him over and rejected him in front of Pilate, even though Pilate had decided to let him go.

You rejected the one who was set apart and just, and instead asked for a murderer to be released to you.

You killed the source of life itself, but God raised him from the dead. We are witnesses to this.

It's the power of Jesus' name — and the trust that comes through him — that has made this man strong. You can see him right here, and you know who he is. The trust that Jesus gives is what has completely healed him, right in front of all of you.

"Now, brothers and sisters, I know that you acted out of ignorance — and so did your leaders.

But this is how God fulfilled what he announced beforehand through all the prophets — that his chosen one, The One, would suffer.

So rethink everything and turn back to God, so that your failures can be wiped away and seasons of refreshment can come from Yahweh's presence,

and so that he can send Jesus, The One who was appointed for you ahead of time.

Heaven must receive him until the time comes for God to restore everything — the restoration he talked about long ago through his set-apart prophets.

Moses said, 'Yahweh your God will raise up a prophet for you from among your own people, just like he raised up me. You must listen to everything he tells you.

Anyone who refuses to listen to that prophet will be completely cut off from the people.'

"In fact, all the prophets from Samuel onward — every single one who spoke — announced what's happening right now.

You are the descendants of those prophets and the heirs of the covenant God made with your ancestors when he told Abraham, 'Through your offspring, all the families of the earth will experience God's generous favor.'

God raised up his servant and sent him to you first, to bring you generous favor by turning each of you away from your corrupt ways."
