After Ahab died, Moab rebelled against Israel.

Ahaziah fell through the lattice window of his upper room in Samaria and was badly injured. So he sent messengers, telling them, "Go ask Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, whether I'll recover from this injury."

But the messenger of Yahweh said to Elijah the Tishbite, "Get up. Go meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say to them, 'Is it because there's no God in Israel that you're going to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron?'"

"So this is what Yahweh says: 'You will never get up from that bed you're lying on — you are going to die.'" Then Elijah left.

When the messengers returned to Ahaziah, he asked them, "Why did you come back?"

They told him, "A man came up to meet us and said, 'Go back to the king who sent you and tell him: This is what Yahweh says — Is it because there's no God in Israel that you're sending to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Because of this, you will never get up from that bed you're lying on — you are going to die.'"

He asked them, "What kind of man was he — the one who came to meet you and told you these things?"

They answered, "He was a man wearing a garment of hair with a leather belt around his waist." The king said, "That's Elijah the Tishbite."

Then the king sent a captain with his fifty soldiers to Elijah. The captain went up to him where he was sitting on top of a hill and said, "Man of God, the king says, 'Come down!'"

Elijah answered the captain, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty soldiers." And fire came down from the sky and consumed him and his fifty.

The king sent another captain with his fifty soldiers. The captain said to Elijah, "Man of God, this is what the king says: 'Come down immediately!'"

Elijah answered them, "If I am a man of God, let fire come down from the sky and consume you and your fifty soldiers." And the fire of God came down from the sky and consumed him and his fifty.

The king sent a third captain with his fifty soldiers. This third captain went up, fell on his knees before Elijah, and begged him, "Man of God, please — let my life and the lives of these fifty men, your servants, mean something to you."

"Fire has already come down from the sky and consumed the first two captains and their fifty soldiers each. But now, please, let my life mean something to you."

The messenger of Yahweh said to Elijah, "Go down with him. Don't be afraid of him." So Elijah got up and went down with the captain to the king.

He told the king, "This is what Yahweh says: 'Because you sent messengers to consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron — as if there's no God in Israel whose word you could seek — you will never get up from that bed you're lying on. You are going to die.'"

So Ahaziah died, just as Yahweh had spoken through Elijah. Since Ahaziah had no son, Joram succeeded him as king in the second year of Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat, king of Judah.
