In the thirty-sixth year of Asa's reign, Baasha king of Israel marched against Judah and fortified Ramah to cut off anyone from going to or coming from Asa king of Judah.

So Asa took silver and gold from the treasuries of Yahweh's house and the royal palace and sent them to Ben-Hadad king of Aram, who was ruling in Damascus. He said,

"There's a treaty between me and you, just as there was between my father and your father. Look — I'm sending you silver and gold. Go break your treaty with Baasha king of Israel so he'll pull back from me."

Ben-Hadad agreed with King Asa and sent his army commanders against the towns of Israel. They attacked Ijon, Dan, Abel-Maim, and all the storage cities of Naphtali.

When Baasha heard about it, he stopped fortifying Ramah and abandoned his project.

Then King Asa brought all of Judah, and they hauled away the stones and timber Baasha had been using to fortify Ramah. With those materials he fortified Geba and Mizpah.

At that time Hanani the seer came to King Asa of Judah and said to him, "Because you relied on the king of Aram instead of relying on Yahweh your God, the army of the king of Aram has escaped from your grasp.

Weren't the Cushites and Libyans a massive army with huge numbers of chariots and horsemen? Yet when you relied on Yahweh, he handed them over to you.

For Yahweh's eyes scan the whole earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You've acted foolishly in this. From now on, you'll be at war."

Asa was furious at the seer and threw him in prison — he was enraged over this. Asa also brutally oppressed some of the people at the same time.

The events of Asa's reign, from beginning to end, are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.

In the thirty-ninth year of his reign, Asa developed a severe disease in his feet. Even in his illness, he didn't look for Yahweh but only for doctors.

Asa died in the forty-first year of his reign.

They buried him in the tomb he had carved out for himself in the City of David. They laid him on a bed filled with spices and various blended perfumes. And they lit a massive bonfire in his honor.
