So to the elders among you, I make this appeal as a fellow elder myself, as someone who saw the suffering of the One with his own eyes, and as someone who will share in the glory that's about to be revealed:

Take care of God's flock that's been entrusted to you. Watch over them — not because you have to, but because you genuinely want to, the way God wants it done. Not for the money, but because you're eager to serve.

Don't lord it over the people assigned to your care — instead, be an example that the flock can follow.

And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you'll receive the crown of glory that never fades.

In the same way, those of you who are younger — put yourselves under the guidance of the elders. And all of you, clothe yourselves in humility toward each other, because God opposes the arrogant but gives undeserved kindness to the humble.

So humble yourselves under God's powerful hand, and at the right time he'll lift you up.

Throw all your anxiety on him, because he genuinely cares about you.

Stay clear-headed. Stay alert. Your enemy, the devil, is prowling around like a roaring lion, hunting for someone to devour.

Stand your ground against him, solid in your trust in God, knowing that your brothers and sisters scattered across the world are going through the same kind of suffering.

And after you've gone through this suffering for a little while, the God of all undeserved kindness — who called you into his limitless glory through the One — will personally restore you, make you strong, make you firm, and establish you on solid ground.

To him belongs the power forever and ever. Absolutely.

I'm writing you this brief letter through Silvanus, who I consider a faithful brother. I want to encourage you and to confirm that this is the true undeserved kindness of God. Stand firm in it.
